Probably the chroma effect is one of the most popular and striking from the list of those that we can see in various audiovisual productions. From amateur videos and live performances to big Hollywood blockbusters, the green background is already a recognizable element for most, which invites us to think about what it will be replaced with in the post-production phase. There are even audio visual fans who have their own sheets of this color to take advantage of this color effect.

Now you might be wondering what the heck is chroma, chroma key, blue screen and other such terms, although in that case I will tell you in advance that you definitely know it and that all you need to know is that this is the name, by which it is very commonly called. In short, it consists of record a scene where the background is a solid color, which must not match anything in the rest of the scene. The most common is green, but it can actually be done with many others.

Once the recording is done, it will be adjusted and the green background (or the color chosen for it) is replaced by another image or video. So we achieve the effect that the object recorded with a green background is in the environment that we added later. You can find a very close example of this in the practical part we published a few days ago about NVIDIA Broadcast, more precisely in the “Background Replacement” section. And exactly in accordance with the aforementioned publication, today we go a little further, as we promised at the time.

So yes, keep in mind that in this practice we will be using NVIDIA Broadcast, so it is necessary that you have a graphics adapter (desktop or laptop) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20, 30 or 40 series. As for the image, for this article we repeat with the Razer Kiyo Pro camera, which gave us such good results in previous practice.

So the first thing you’ll need to do is open NVIDIA Broadcast and select the “Background Removal” effect in the camera section. If you wish, you can combine it, for example, with another

With the NVIDIA Broadcast output signal ready, it’s time to go into OBS Studio. If you don’t know how to set up a Broadcast signal in OBS, this article will explain it step by step.

Partially following the instructions of this tutorial, now create a new scene in OBS Studio and add the video signal and audio signal from NVIDIA Broadcast as sources and adjust the size and position of your image on the screen. , for example:

Something amazing, and what you’re about to check, is that when you receive an image in this way, OBS interprets that you want to remove the background in order to apply the chroma effect, so you won’t have to do anything else in that regard.

For example, let’s say you want to record yourself explaining how to do a certain action with Excel (you can do this with any application, with the entire desktop, with games, etc.). Now open the app you want to use and once it’s ready, go back to OBS.

Then under “Resources” mark that you want to add a new one and choose a window capture (for games and desktop Excel you have “Game Capture” and “Screen Capture” resources) and use the wizard that appears to choose which window you want use

In the end, you will probably find that only the window you selected is displayed and that your image has disappeared. Don’t worry, it’s actually still there, just “under” the window. Use the resources section, in which a window will appear above the camera at that moment

Your image will therefore immediately appear in a window, in this case an Excel window

Simple, right? Everything is ready to use the chroma effect. Now you just have to choose what you want to do with OBS (transmit, record or virtual camera) and do it in the usual way.
