China’s Zhurong rover has discovered evidence of a dramatic climate change that occurred on Mars 400,000 years ago. The researchers used data from the rover and China’s Tianwen-1 Mars Orbiter to study the sand dunes of the Utopia Plain.
Dark ridges known as Transverse Aeolian Ridges (TARs) have been found to form over sand dunes over the last 400,000 years.

Interestingly, these climate changes on Mars are related to the ice age and the change in the planet’s rotation angle. Scientists state that this shows that Mars is also prone to climatic changes similar to Milankovitch cycles on Earth.
But the ice age on Mars proceeded in an unusual way, different from what is observed on our planet. According to the researchers, understanding the climate on Mars in the past could help explain the planet’s features today and relate them to ancient climate patterns.
