Apple is one of the few trillion-dollar tech companies, so users can expect unmatched customer service from them. The company recently took quick steps to patch a critical vulnerability in the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. The tech giant has released Rapid Security Response updates including iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1 to fix a WebKit vulnerability that is currently in high use. Since WebKit is the browser engine used by Safari, it is essential that users install updates immediately to ensure their devices are protected.
To install the update, users just need to follow the same process as a standard update. They can go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the given instructions. The whole installation process will only take a few minutes and then the device will reboot.
These updates are labeled iOS 16.5.1 (a) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) to indicate that they are different versions that address issues with previous versions released on June 21. Apple acknowledged that a flaw in WebKit could potentially allow attackers to execute arbitrary code by manipulating web content on target devices. While the company is aware of a report suggesting that the vulnerability may have been actively exploited, it is currently unclear whether any personal data was compromised as a result.
Mac users running macOS Ventura 13.4.1 receive the Rapid Security Response update to fix the same Safari browser vulnerability, in addition to iOS and iPadOS. To install the update on a Mac, users need to go to the Apple menu, select System Preferences, click General, then go to Software Update.
This proactive approach from Apple ensures that critical vulnerabilities are quickly remedied, protecting users’ data and maintaining the overall security of their devices. Users are strongly encouraged to prioritize the installation of these updates to mitigate the potential risks associated with WebKit vulnerabilities.
