Year-on-year, global PC sales fell 13.4 percent. Lenovo is hit, HP and Apple are spinning yarn.
Another quarter, another report confirming the continued decline in PC sales. After a sharp decline in 2022 compared to 2021 (350 million versus 292 million), 2023 offers little improvement. In the first quarter, sales had already fallen by 29 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. According to IDC, the second quarter saw a slight year-on-year decline to 13.4 percent.
It’s the sixth consecutive quarter that the PC market has contracted. The analyst firm states that the decline is less severe than initially expected. In the second quarter of 2023, 61.6 million PCs were shipped. Lenovo moved the most units, but suffered a setback (-18%). Dell (-22%) is also struggling this quarter. HP (-0.8%) and Apple (+10%) are the big winners.
This is an important bright spot for HP after the company lost 27.9 percent in the same period last year. The status quo now means that Lenovo is very close to being the market leader again.
Demanding PC market
According to IDC, the PC market remains very challenging. “The roller coaster ride of supply and demand over the past five years has made it difficult for everyone. Manufacturers do not want any more bottlenecks like in 2020 and 2021, but at the same time they do not dare to bet on a recovery of the market.”
IDC believes consumers will return to their pre-coronavirus habits of placing smartphones over PCs. On the professional side, the economy is forcing many organizations to layoffs, and the hype surrounding generative AI is adding to the confusion about where computing budgets should now go.
Result: Low demand leads to large inventories, which have an impact from the store to the logistics chain. According to IDC, surpluses are steadily declining and many component manufacturers are offering interesting discounts to also reduce their inventories. PC manufacturers, on the other hand, are reluctant to introduce new systems due to limited demand.
