Google Play Store now allows apps to sell NFTs

This week, Google announced an update to the Google Play Store policy that will allow digital assets such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to be integrated into gaming apps. The change is planned to be rolled out to the app later this year.

NFTs that work with blockchain technology are like certificates that prove ownership of something unique in the digital world, such as art, music, or virtual items. They allow artists and creators to sell their digital creations directly to fans, and collectors can own and sell these unique digital items.

Thus, Google’s new policy requires developers to be transparent with users regarding these digital assets. As such, they cannot contribute to any potential benefit from gambling or trading activities. However, application creators should be aware of this.

This is because the company has said that apps that do not comply with Google Play’s policies on games, gambling, and real money contests cannot accept money for a chance to win assets with an unknown actual cash value.

These restrictions are intended to protect users from questionable activities and to prevent the distribution of questionable NFT applications on the Play Store. The move will also allow apps and games on Google Play to reimagine “traditional titles with user-generated content to increase user loyalty through unique NFT rewards,” said Joseph Mills, Google Group Product Manager.

Google conducts tests with developers to launch new items

The delay in implementing changes to the Google Play Store policy is due to tests that are being conducted with a selected group of developers. Reddit, which has been successful with its cryptocurrency wallets and NFT avatars, has partnered with Google to help update its policy.

Going forward, Google Play plans to work with industry partners to further improve support for blockchain-based applications, including secondary markets. In the meantime, users are waiting for the official release of the update in the store.
