Mexico and Brazil will join the Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna

Mexico and Brazil will be members of the Central Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) of Dubna, located about a hundred kilometers north of Moscow, an example that could be followed by other Latin American countries such as Argentina and Chile, said director of this scientific institution Grigory Trubnikov today.

Now Mexico and Brazil are coming to Dubna. Egypt became a full member last year. And now we are seriously discussing (candidates) of India, Argentina and Chile,” he said during a speech at the Future Technology Forum, held this Thursday in the Russian capital, RIA Novosti reports.

The JINR Director emphasized that there are many countries that do not want to follow the “dictatorship of the West” and break off their scientific relations with Russia, as they are interested in being able to carry out important research projects together with Russian scientists.

One example of this is the expansion of the participating countries of the Dubna Nuclear Research Center, the largest of its kind in Russia and one of the world’s pioneers in the creation and use of cyclotrons.

So far, Cuba has been the only Latin American member country of JINR.

The Institute was founded in 1956 with the participation of eleven countries of the then socialist camp and from the very beginning was engaged in both theoretical and practical nuclear research.

A year after its founding, the Institute launched the first Soviet particle accelerator and the fourth in the world, it was preceded by two American accelerators and one British one.

Currently, the institute employs about 6000 people, there are seven laboratories of theoretical nuclear physics, radiobiology, neutron physics, computer technology and others.

It includes a superconducting particle accelerator, a Nuclotron, three isochronous cyclotrons, a phasotron and a synchrophasotron, as well as a pulsed fast neutron reactor.
