What’s the problem

There was a problem because Entering .ML instead of .MIL for email address domain, receiving the message. That’s why the letters still reach Mali. Some also contain classified information about US military personnel, contractors and their families. senior officers’ diplomatic documents, tax returns, passwords and travel information. At the same time, none of the messages were marked as confidential.

While the forwarded emails (for now) went to the contractor tasked with managing Mali’s national domain, control of the .ML domain name will soon revert to the Mali government, which has ties to Russia.

The problem was spotted by Johannes Zuurbje, a Dutch contractor who manages Mali’s national area. He says there have been multiple attempts since 2014 to warn the US of the problem. But no one listens to him. At first, Zuurbier apparently deleted all the emails he received, but later this year he began collecting emails in a last-ditch effort to persuade the U.S. government to take immediate action. The man writes in his letter that he has collected about 117,000 emails, of which almost a thousand were received just last Wednesday.

Among the messages Zuurbier received are the following:

• One of the emails from the FBI agent contained a letter from Turkish diplomacy warning the US against possible operations by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Commenting on the situation on behalf of the Pentagon, Lieutenant Colonel Tim Gorman said that emails sent from a .MIL address to a .ML address were “blocked before leaving the .mile field and the sender was told to do so.” verify recipient’s email addresses”. This suggests that the forwarded emails may have come from personal accounts of US military personnel.
