A new UI update may have been released by Gmail for Android for advanced devices. This includes a new navigation route in the Gmail app for advanced devices. The new update aims to provide better widescreen support for Gmail on foldable phones and tablets. The new interface was first announced in May, but it looks like it’s just getting started.
The new sidebar in Gmail places the compose button on the side of the UI instead of a floating action button. The bottom panel has been moved to the side, and there are also shortcuts for Inbox, chat, and meetings. The new update, it should be noted, appears to be only available for foldables. While the Gmail UI update is not currently available on other devices, it is now available on the Google Pixel Fold. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is missing the UI update, but the Z Fold 4 has a longer form factor and doesn’t launch the tablet interface until it’s flipped.
Gmail’s new navigation bar is common to other tablet designs that Google has already implemented. Most of the Google apps, such as the Play Store, Photos, and Google Home, have been pushed aside to optimize the larger form factor of the tablet. It is noted that the desktop version of Gmail uses a sidebar interface. New Gmail updates for Android Foldables are expected to arrive on the Play Store for all devices soon.
