I know that Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard is not yet complete, but the truth is that after recent events it is close to happening and it is unlikely that any obstacle will appear this could really put her in danger. So much so that even Sony decided to accept the ten-year contract that Microsoft offered to ensure the continuity of Call of Duty on PlayStation.
At this point, I think it’s a good time to start giving my opinion on this shopping spree, and as always, I’m going to get wet first. In general, I believe that Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard could have a silver liningmainly for three main reasons:
The arrival of Call of Duty on Nintendo consoles, something that would allow more competition and give access to the franchise to a huge number of players.
Possible inclusion of Activision Blizzard games in Game Pass for PC and Xbox, which would allow us to play important triple A titles for very little money.
The purchase could also allow Activision Blizzard to venture into developing new franchises and perhaps encourage them to take more risks in that regard by having Microsoft’s backing.
However, it should also be taken into account that in the end it’s also possible that Microsoft will decide to make it exclusive any of Activision Blizzard’s current or future franchises, i.e. pending development. This may not be a bad thing in the true sense of the word, as it is ultimately a practice that both Sony and Nintendo follow, but it will all depend on the approach and the actual scope it has.
We have a very clear example as we have already seen it with Bethesda and similar titles Red Fall and Star Fieldand we can’t rule out that they like the games The Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5 will end up exclusive to Xbox Series X-Series S and PC. With this precedent, it is clear that there is also the possibility that the Diablo saga and other Blizzard franchises, as well as its future projects, will eventually be exclusive to these platforms.
Is it bad that Microsoft wants more exclusives? Generally no, it’s actually the way the industry works, and that’s why Activision Blizzard’s purchase can’t be considered bad news in itself, especially given the concessions the company has made. What would be the problem if Microsoft decided they break their promises and concessions and make all Activision Blizzard games exclusive. Now it’s your turn, read in the comments.
