Google will soon implement Emergency SOS on Wear OS. It will work just like Android smartphones and will allow users to directly contact relatives or government agencies through their smartwatches in case of emergency.
Among the many equipment announcements made during the main event I/O 2022, it’s easy to see how less polished software installations can go unnoticed. However, while the Emergency SOS feature for Wear OS isn’t particularly exciting, it’s still no less important than the Pixel everyone’s talking about.
Emergency SOS on Android is by no means a new concept. Almost every smartphone has its own analogue of this option. What’s new is that this feature is now available on devices running Wear OS. On Android phones, the user needs to press the power button 5 times in a row to activate the Emergency SOS. It’s unclear how this feature might work on Wear OS, but it looks like a similar shortcut with a voice command as an alternative method.
Emergency SOS for Wear OS will work just as well as for Android. To enable this, the user has to start by filling in the required contact information. Only after this is done can they activate the Emergency SOS. It is important to note that for this feature of the smartwatch to be used later, the device must be connected to a smartphone that can connect to a cellular network if it does not support LTE.
Enabling Emergency SOS prompts users to choose who they want to contact (with a specific contact or directly with emergency services). They can easily cancel the call with the big red button on the main screen of the watch and additional options will be offered after the call.
It is not yet known when this feature will be released. Apple has already implemented a similar option on the Apple Watch. Based on Google’s past performance, it may take some time for Emergency SOS to appear on Wear OS. Source
