A mysterious meteor seen in the sky over Victoria on Monday night is likely the remains of a Russian rocket that entered Earth’s atmosphere, the Australian Space Agency said.

As reported by Ukrinform, The Guardian reports this.

As noted, a large streak of light burned for almost a minute just after midnight, before breaking into pieces that continued to glow brightly.

The video was posted on the network assuming it was a meteor, comet, or space debris.

The Australian Space Agency said the object in the sky is most likely the remains of a Russian Soyuz rocket launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome north of Moscow on the evening of August 6. This rocket launched a new navigation satellite into orbit.

Flinders University said the 105-tonne, 25-metre-long rocket fell to “extremely high altitude” after running out of fuel.

The surviving parts of the rocket were planned to be safely returned to the atmosphere in the ocean off the southeast coast of the Australian state of Tasmania, according to the space agency.
