Iraq’s official media regulator on Tuesday ordered the press and all social networks operating in the Arab state not to use the term.homosexualityand say “sexual deviance” instead.

This is stated in a statement by the Iraqi Communications and Media Commission. You can’t use the word “gender” either.. It banned all authorized phone and internet companies from using these terms in any of its mobile apps.

The regulator “orders the media (…) not to use the term ‘homosexuality’ and to use the correct term “sexual deviation”“, the statement said in Arabic.

A government spokesman said the penalty for breaking the rule has not yet been set, but it could include a fine.

Iraq does not directly punish homosexual relationshipsbut vaguely defined moral provisions were used in his penal code to attack members of the LGBT community.

Over the past two months, major Iraqi parties have stepped up their criticism of women’s rights. LGBTand rainbow flags have often been burned in protests by Shiite Muslim groups opposed to the recent Koran burnings in Sweden and Denmark.

More than 60 countries criminalize homosexual relations, while intercourse between people of the same sex according to Our World in Data, they are allowed in more than 130 countries.
