The right use of data is already making it possible to solve the problem of road safety in the world.
Data is the new oil, the engine that drives the positive development of our roads.
Artificial intelligence (AI) helps to process large amounts of information and contributes to its transformation into practical knowledge.
Every year, more than 1.3 million people worldwide die in road traffic accidents, and many more suffer life-changing injuries. Working to solve the planet’s road safety problems is a priority for Bridgestone, part of its corporate agenda and its goal to be a company that provides sustainable mobility solutions.
According to Ragunath Banerjee, vice president of data and innovation solutions at Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, “This is a particularly serious problem in cities where congestion is increasing due to rapid urbanization: by 2050, more than 80% of the world’s population will live in cities. The streets of big cities are overcrowded and are falling into disrepair faster than they can be repaired. And so when you combine busy roads with potholes, cracks and weakened infrastructure, safety will always be at risk.”
But all is not lost: the use of data is already solving the big problem of road safety that exists in the world.
Municipalities and local governments are currently under a lot of pressure to make roads safer, but if there is no real information about what is happening on them 24 hours a day, any efforts made to improve them will depend on data in the mode real time and without this data. progress on road safety will be very slow.
“We have reached the point where this should no longer be the case. Connected vehicles, which have been on the mobility industry roadmap for some time, are already on the planet’s roads and are helping us better understand them,” says Banerjee. “We are currently using these vehicles and their sensors to collect anonymous and aggregated real-time data such as sudden braking incidents, road conditions, traffic volume and vehicle speed. And this is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in, which processes large amounts of information and helps us transform it into practical knowledge, ”he added.
With these results, for example, it is possible to identify the most crash-prone junctions, areas of infrastructure that cause frequent congestion, and enable preventive road maintenance that can save time, design and save lives. With AI-enhanced data, the reality of roads can also be shown to local governments to help them develop evidence-based road safety measures with real-time information. “Data is the new oil, the engine that drives the positive development of our roads and the future of smart city planning,” Banerjee said.
The Dutch city of Alkmaar is a great example of restoring road infrastructure in the name of safety. A third of the city is under redevelopment and is becoming a model for the development and application of new urban technologies with a project involving Bridgestone Mobility Solutions.
The city is proving that with the help of sensors and real-time data collection, we can see what is really happening on the roads and predict what will happen next. Bridgestone Mobility Solutions’ contribution to this effort is based on using data from all vehicles in the city to record and monitor braking in real time, determining where, how often and why drivers brake. You can then see this data in real time, helping you determine where security risks lie. And this is a breakthrough in this area. Data is the key, but the city of Alkmaar is proving that a progressive approach to data sharing can make the most of tomorrow’s cities.
Promoting sustainable mobility is part of Bridgestone’s global commitment to social responsibility, articulated in the Bridgestone Commitment E8, which consists of 8 values that begin with the letter “E” – in English (Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Expansion, Savings, Emotions, Ease, Empowerment) which the company undertakes to create and provide together with society, its partners.
