The all-new Synology DS124 has room for one hard drive, which is not ideal as the sole backup option. On the other hand, it is interesting to use this NAS as an edge solution, where the head office has all data (including backups) and the DS124 is active in a branch office.
Despite the limited space for a hard drive, you get all the features of Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) web portal. This includes a secure private cloud option and facilitates secure data sharing. Data backup in the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, AWS or Synology) is always an option.
The Synology DS124 can also be used for video surveillance. Synology Surveillance Station application offers compatibility with 8,300 IP cameras or ONVIF devices.
The heart of the NAS is a Realtek RTD1619B, an ARM chip (4-core 1.7 GHz) supported by 1 GB of DDR4 RAM.
The Synology DS124 is available today and costs an average online price of 189 euros excluding VAT. The NAS comes without hard drives.
In addition to a new base model, Synology is also launching a more powerful version of its 2-bay NAS under the name DS224+. Here you will find a more powerful Intel Celeron J4125 (quad core 2.0 GHz) with 2 GB DDR4 RAM. This memory is soldered to the mainboard, but the manufacturer also offers an additional DIMM slot for installing up to 4 GB of DDR4 RAM.
Not one, but two 1GbE Ethernet ports are available on the rear for link aggregation or failover support. The Synology DS224+ also focuses on lower power consumption with a maximum of 15 watts under load.
The Synology DS224+ is available from today and costs an average online price of 310 euros excluding VAT. The NAS comes without hard drives.
