Google will continue to add generative AI capabilities to the Chrome browser. The browser can now summarize long articles for you.

The tech giant announced a revamped AI-powered search experience at its I/O conference in May, and now it wants to bring it to a wider audience. Is there a better tool for this than the Chrome browser, still by far the most popular internet browser? In a blog, Google explains how it intends to make AI search a fundamental part of the browser experience in Chrome.

summarize articles

Are you short on time to read a new longread on ITdaily? Don’t worry, Chrome can now use AI to summarize articles for you. You will immediately recognize the essence of the article in a few bullet points. Clicking on a bullet point takes you further to the corresponding paragraph in the text, where you can continue reading.

Google will first roll out this new feature in the Chrome mobile app for Android and iOS, with the desktop version to follow soon. Initially limited to Search Labs users, Google’s Windows Insiders before the general public can begin. There is one major caveat: this only works for publicly available articles and blogs. Chrome doesn’t process articles that are behind a paywall to drive down publisher revenue.

Google is also refining the display of AI-generated search results in the search engine. It has recently become possible to summarize the most relevant pages for your search query, this function is also being tested with a limited target group for the time being. If you don’t understand a word in this summary, select it with your cursor and Google will provide you with a definition. You can then also perform a new search for that specific word.

In addition, Google also displays additional information for coding questions. All of this is detailed in this blog.
