International hacker group Anonymous has launched cyberattacks on nuclear energy-related sites in Japan to protest the planned release of purified radioactive water into the sea from the damaged Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Kyodo agency.

Anonymous increased its cyberattacks last month. This comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency said the planned discharge of purified radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant meets global safety standards.

The targets of the hacker attack were the following organizations: Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Japan Atomic Power Co, Japan Atomic Energy Society.

Hackers from the Anonymous group launched targeted DDoS attacks, with an Italy-based group spearheading the attack. The activity of a Vietnam-based group was also confirmed.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency said that after the attack, the traffic on the website was 100 times higher than normal, but users can continue to browse the site as the agency took precautions against the attack.

Earlier, the Anonymous group published a “target list” of its attacks. This happened after the Japanese government officially decided to release treated water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, owned by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc., in 2021.

As reported, Japan is considering the possibility of starting the discharge of purified radioactive water from the Fukushima NPP into the sea in late August – early September.

Previously, the IAEA concluded that Japan’s plans to discharge wastewater from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant into the sea meet safety standards.

After that, Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority gave official permission to TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, to begin dumping the treated radioactive water into the open sea.
