The US Department of Defense has decided to restart a project to acquire a new drone that will simulate enemy warplanes. Especially the Russian Su-57 and the Chinese J-20.

what is known

Advanced Technology International has signed a contract to develop a prototype of the 5th Generation Air Target (5GAT). The U.S. Army Contract Command (U.S. Army Contract Command) office signed the deal, which would be worth $77.2 million if all options were exercised.

The main contractor is Sierra Technical Services. The company developed an older target drone as part of the 5GAT program. This drone will form the basis of the new project.

The development of the previous version of the UAV began more than 15 years ago. About three years ago, the first prototype of the drone crashed during its first test flight due to software problems. This caused the program to freeze.

The first prototype 5GAT had a long nose. The diamond-shaped wings and air intakes were moved to the rear of the drone. The drone can take off and land like a normal airplane.

As we wrote above, the new 5GAT will imitate the Russian Su-57 fighter jet and the Chinese J-20. First of all, the possibility of radio-electronic warfare will be discussed. The cost of the drone was not specified, but Sierra Technical Services previously estimated that one drone would cost less than $10 million to manufacture.Source: War Zone
