The US has achieved good results in directed energy and laser warfare research. This was stated by Laura Desimone, director of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

In connection with the completion of new research in the field of directed energy, the US Army is showing “increasing interest” in the development of directed energy weapons to destroy enemy missiles.

The Department of Defense has been actively developing lasers and high-power microwaves for missile defense since the beginning of Ronald Reagan’s defense initiative. There has been a surge of interest in recent years, which later faded due to the technology’s imperfection, but now the technology is improving and “giving great results,” he said.

“We were constantly researching, studying the effects of warfare and experimenting. And now we’re starting to see real progress,” says Desimone.

The US Department of Defense has allocated funds to Lockheed Martin to investigate how directed energy weapons can be integrated with the agency’s existing systems based on ballistic and future kinetic interception of hypersonic missiles.

The Ministry of Defense wants to obtain compact, reliable and effective lasers for air defense systems. Diode-pumped (continuous or pulsed) fiber, solid-state, gas, and liquid-phase lasers are of particular interest. Source
