Samsung is the world’s leading SSD vendor, and the SSD 990 PRO stands out at the top end of its catalog. A year after its arrival on the market, the South Korean company announced the launch of a new version with Capacity 4 TB.

In computing, everything stays small, and when it comes to storage, the saying usually applies: no matter how big it is, you’ll eventually fill it up. And it’s because, for example, today’s great PC games can take up 150 GB without breaking a sweat. The Samsung SSD was originally launched with 1 and 2 Tbytes and has now announced that it will double its capacity.

The new model retains the features of the series with new-generation Samsung V-NAND TLC 3-bit memories and a completely new controller that the company also developed. It uses the M.2 format, the PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 interface and the latest NVMe 2.0 protocol available.

Its data transfer speeds are 7450 / 6900 MB/s in sequential read/write mode. The improvement in random performance over the previous models (980 PRO) is even greater, 55% higher, reaching up to 1,400,000 IOPS and 1,550,000 IOPS read and write. It should be noted that Samsung’s redesigned controller drastically improves the SSD’s energy efficiency, up to 50%.

It supports AES 256-bit full disk encryption and TCG/Opal V2.0 and offers free Samsung Magician management software. Its degree of resistance is high, from 600 to 2,400 Tbytes written. Finally, note the included heatsink and RGB lighting that add style and customization to the unit.

The 4TB Samsung SSD 990 PRO should be available on the international channel soon. It will be distributed in versions with or without a cooler. No prizes were awarded. To give an idea, the current 2 TB version costs 180 euros on Amazon, while the 1 TB version is on PcComponentes for 124 euros.
