Rumor has it that Huawei is building secret chip factories to circumvent US sanctions. However, concrete evidence is lacking.

Rumors are circulating in media circles about Huawei’s plan to build several secret semiconductor factories. With this fab network, Huawei and China want to circumvent the technology sanctions of the USA. Finally, the US bans the export of technology enabling the construction of the world’s most advanced microchips to Chinese companies suspected of collaborating with the state. Huawei is at the top of the list of suspicious organizations.

Behind the scenes

The factories would be built for Huawei, but under the names of other organizations. Huawei’s role in setting it up is deliberately kept secret to avoid sanctions. Huawei is said to have already bought two existing factories with government money and is building three new ones.

Bloomberg reports the news on the authority of sources at the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Huawei itself does not make any plans public. The SIA, in turn, claims that it has not uncovered any secret conspiracy, but merely summarized publicly available information. According to the organization, Bloomberg’s conclusions are therefore not accurate. However, the heart of the matter, the existence of factories with secret interference from Huawei, is not denied.
