The US Department of Defense has approved a program to upgrade air defense systems with new Lockheed Martin Sentinel A4 phased arrays; This is a critical upgrade for the country’s future defense capability.
According to the approved program, the US Army will receive 19 upgraded radar systems by 2025. Major General Frank Lozano said the Army’s current goal of acquiring radar is 240 systems that will provide air defense systems to at least six battalions.
The Sentinel A4 Active Electronically Scanned Grid is a next-generation radar to replace the existing progressive and frequency scanning gratings in the Sentinel A3 and earlier versions.
The upgraded radar station is capable of detecting cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, rockets, artillery and mortars, as well as simultaneously detecting and tracking different types of threats.
“There has been a lot of discussion about cruise missile defense over the last five to seven years and a lot of pressure to have a good IBCS system. The Sentinel A4 is a key component of this process and the US Army will receive a truly high-quality radar,” said Lozano.
