Google significantly expands Duet AI capabilities at Cloud Next conference. The counterpart to Microsoft’s Copilot should be able to serve you anywhere in Google’s cloud ecosystem.
During Google I/O, we first encountered Duet AI: the new AI assistant for Workspace. After a tentative initial introduction, Google seems ready to go full throttle. At the cloud division’s Next conference, which begins today in San Francisco, Duet AI is one of the big stars of the show. Google announces many new possibilities and wants to spice up its entire cloud with AI.
From email to presentation
Workspace subscribers can prepare for the “next wave of innovation” to come. Google has already introduced Duet AI in Gmail, Slides, Meet, Docs and Sheets and artificial intelligence is now supposed to be even more the glue that holds everything together. One of the new features Google is introducing is turning the content of an email or a Drive file into a presentation with a single prompt.

Do you have to miss an important meeting? Don’t worry, Duet AI follows for you and then creates a summary for you with the top talking points. AI Notes aren’t error-free, as we found out for ourselves, but they give you a good overview of what was discussed. Google Meet now integrates this functionality by default.
When using the chat app in Workspace, Google adds Duet AI as a conversational partner. Duet AI helps you find messages and attachments, or summarizes conversations for you when you get back from vacation, so you’re instantly connected. Competitors Slack and Microsoft Teams are also expanding their communication platforms with numerous AI functions.
all-rounder
For Google, Duet AI’s contribution doesn’t have to be limited to the workspace applications. One AI announcement follows another during Cloud Next. Google wants to use Duet AI as a centipede that can help you write text, analyze data, program applications, and even backup.
Here are some of the new skills Duet AI has learned:
Code Cleanup: Occasionally it is necessary to update or rewrite an application’s code in a new language. This process manually can take months. Now you can simply ask Duet AI to convert the code to the programming language of your choice and the AI will do the rest.
Generate company-specific code: Based on company-specific knowledge, Duet AI can create unique code for files and databases it has access to.
Develop APIs: Through the application integration platform, you can use Duet AI to develop APIs for your applications.
That is not all. Google is also announcing Duet AI integrations with Looker, BigQuery, and AlloyDB, among others. Finally, the AI Assistant also gets a spot in the SOC and Command Center to help security teams spot threats faster and nip them in the bud.
Do it yourself with Vertex
The advantage of Duet AI is that you get ready-made artificial intelligence. But some companies prefer to do it themselves, which is why Google introduced Vertex at I/O, a kind of library that can be used to access AI models. Google offers models from its own store such as PaLM, Codey and Imagen, but is expanding the catalog to include models from other providers. Notable names include Claude 2 from Anthropic and LLama 2 from Meta.
