AWS caters to public sector customers through a fully managed infrastructure designed solely for single customer or community consumption.

AWS announces AWS Dedicated Local Zones, a type of AWS infrastructure fully managed by AWS. The Website is made available for the exclusive use of a customer or community in a specific location or data center to help comply with legal requirements. Dedicated local zones can be managed by local AWS employees and offer the same benefits as local zones, such as elasticity, scalability, and pay-as-you-go pricing, with additional security and management features

With the new solution, AWS is targeting customers in the public and regulated sectors who require dedicated infrastructure for the most critical workloads. This makes it easier for them to meet legal or other compliance requirements.

Many of these customers manage their own on-premises infrastructure for workloads that need isolation. “This comes at the expense of the performance, innovation, elasticity, scalability, and resiliency advantages of the cloud,” AWS said.

Specific Geographical Locations

AWS customers have always been in control of where their data resides. In Europe, for example, they have the choice to deploy their data in one of the eight existing AWS Regions. You can also now leverage AWS Local Zones, a form of infrastructure deployment that makes AWS services available in more locations to meet latency and data location requirements without having to deploy self-managed infrastructure.

To comply with data residency regulations, workloads can run in specific geographic locations where AWS Regions and Local Zones are available.

Additional security and management features of the dedicated local zones include tools to monitor and audit data access, controls to limit infrastructure access to customer-selected AWS accounts, and options to enforce security clearances or other criteria for on-premises AWS employees.

With dedicated local zones, AWS works with customers to configure their own local zones with the services and features they need to meet their regulatory requirements. AWS Dedicated Local Zones are subject to the same high AWS security standards that apply to AWS Regions and Local Zones.
