In a surprise move, Google announced that starting August 29, 2023, the Pixel Pass subscription service will be discontinued due to new purchases and renewals. The decision has raised questions and some concerns among Google Pixel enthusiasts and existing Pixel Pass subscribers.
Google said it focuses on providing value through its hardware products and giving users the flexibility to choose their favorite Google services. The company is evaluating alternative offers in response to customer feedback, signaling that we may see new end-to-end services in the future.
If you’re already a Pixel Pass subscriber, you can breathe a little easier. Google confirms that existing subscriptions will not be affected. Existing customers can continue to enjoy benefits for a full two years from the delivery date of their Pixel device.
Is it a sweetener? Bonus credit of $100 that can be used on future Google Store purchases or the purchase of a new Pixel device over Google Fi Wireless.
Google directs customers to purchase directly from the Google Store or Google Fi Wireless; both offer trading programs. For those wishing to subscribe to Google services, the options are still wide open: Google One, YouTube Premium and Google Play Pass can be purchased separately from their respective websites.
At the end of the two-year period, your Pixel phone will be entirely yours. Your device protection service agreements will expire, but your Google One, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass subscriptions will continue at a discounted price unless cancelled. The end of Pixel Pass may disappoint some, but Google assures existing customers that the level of service will not decrease. Meanwhile, potential buyers will need to reconsider their purchasing plans, but there are still plenty of options available thanks to Google’s standalone services and sharing programs.
Now all eyes are on Google to find out what’s next in its quest to best align hardware and software services to meet consumer needs.
