It seems Elon Musk can’t live without being in the news at the same time, so he announced audio and video calls as a new feature for X. The tycoon is willing to continue blurring everything that Twitter has been in the past, whether it’s slapstick like the beginnings of Twitter Blue or the removal of the account blocking feature, among many others.

About X’s future audio and video calling feature (which for many will always be Twitter), Elon Musk briefly explained this through his official account that will not require a phone number, making X an “effective global directory” and will work on iOS, Android, Mac and PC (we assume it refers to Windows). One question that remains up in the air is whether it will have support via the web, a medium that is increasingly less popular among companies that prefer to deploy their own proprietary solutions or rely on DRM.

And that’s all that is known about the future audio and voice calling feature of the X. To be honest, while it looks like an interesting addition on paper, it’s no less true that it comes late and covers a sector that is saturated with similar proposals and which they don’t provide anything of value compared to their competitors, except perhaps some level of privacy in self-service cases. On the other hand, most people don’t see X as a video calling platform, but many Elon Musk fans might give it a try.

The main advantages of the X call function are the lack of a phone number and the large number of users that the social network has. However, starting from a strong user base is no guarantee of anything, as seen with Threads, a social network microblogging which was pushed as an Instagram plugin.

There is still no date for the implementation of X audio and video calls, but if Elon Musk announced them, it will be because the developers of the social network already have a job that at least took shape and is going well. We’ll see how long it lasts with a significant number of users once the feature is rolled out.
