Among its many peers, Zoom has gained particular popularity during the COVID-19 era and continues to do so despite a general decline in the need for video conferencing. Channel 24 will talk about the main points you need to know when using this service, as it does not have a Ukrainian language interface.

Possible problems with downloading the program and registration

If you are using the service for the first time, you must download it first. You can do this on the official website. Select the first button in the “Zoom Desktop Client” block. The installation of the program is quite simple and can take from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the power of your computer. Open the downloaded file and follow the instructions.

After installation you will see a login or registration window. If you have used Zoom before, click the “Sign In” button. If this is the first time, click “Register”.

First, the system will ask you to enter your year of birth. Please note that the company is a little irrational in this regard, because its product is widely used by children for educational purposes, but only allowed to register from the age of 16. If you enter the years from 2007 to 2023, the enrollment will be closed and the program will have to be restarted. Therefore, if a child is enrolled in school classes, please indicate your year of birth.

Then the program will ask for an email address. However, you can also complete the quick registration process using your Google, Apple or Facebook account. If you choose to do this via e-mail, the system will send you a confirmation code to this e-mail. Enter the code and then follow the instructions: enter your first name, last name and password (must include numbers as well as lowercase and uppercase letters; at least 8 characters in total). Please note: you you don’t need to tick the box The following is for schools and education workers only.

At the final stage, the program will open and you will see a login window.

Getting to know Zoom

Initially, the program will ask you to specify some basic settings. Click the first blue button, enter a name to display for all your contacts and add a photo. If this is a student account, it is better to specify the actual dataSo teachers can get to know your child.

You can then link your Google and Microsoft 365 accounts. This allows you to sync calendars, storage, and other company services if you use them. If not, click the “Skip” button at the bottom right.

Now you see the program window in front of you. New Conference (orange), Sign In (plus), Schedule (calendar), and Screen Demo (up arrow) buttons.

Usually, teachers create the invitations for the lessons themselves and then provide you with the link to the conference. So you just need to follow it and connect. If you need to do this yourself, click the “New Conference” button and find the “Participants” button at the bottom, which looks like two human silhouettes. Click on the arrow and select the second “Copy invitation link” item. Then send the link to the business partners.

You can also join with your ID number. To do this, click “Sign In” (plus) and enter the conference ID provided to you and your display name (if you’re not happy with your default name).

Features of the program and interesting functions

• Your microphone and camera will be turned off when joining a conference call. But this moment can be set while connecting. Remember to turn it on when you need to speak.
• We recommend that you take a look at the Zoom settings before using it because the program offers a lot of various minor adjustments that will make your stay more comfortable. To do this, click on your photo in the upper right and select the third menu from the bottom – Settings. So, for example, you can always open it with or without camera and microphone, set the color of emoticons, set audio and video, screenshot, chat, appearance and keyboard shortcuts.
• You can also set a background to appear behind you during calls. The system will automatically select you and place you in the selected background. You can choose video effects in the same background section, but we don’t recommend using it in official and educational conferences.
• You can schedule your meetings in the calendar displayed on the right; there will be a list of all scheduled conferences/lectures.
• To end a started conference, press the lower right red button.
• Zoom offers a paid subscription that offers additional benefits like longer conferences, more people in a meeting, and more.
• Generally The basic version of the service is free allows you to use it both for study and work, and to communicate with friends and family.
• You can also install the app on your smartphone by downloading it from the official app store.
