Scientists predict that more than 1,500 Earth’s ecosystems will be flooded

Scientists from different countries conducted a study to investigate the degree of sustainability of island ecosystems with mangrove forests, swamps and coral reefs in conditions of climate change.

The study found that maintaining current rates of global ocean level rise will not have serious consequences for most mangroves and swamps. But if temperatures rise more than 2°C from pre-industrial levels, more than 1,500 coastal ecosystems could be destroyed or flooded.

The scientists also found that mangrove forests and swamps are 90% likely to be at risk of flooding, with coral reefs 67% likely to be submerged if proper precautions are not taken. In this context, scientists call on the governments of countries and international organizations to take additional measures to protect ecosystems in coastal areas.

For their study, the scientists analyzed data from 872 islands with 190 mangrove forests, 477 swamps and coral reefs from around the world. They propose expanding protected areas and regulating coastal development to protect these ecosystems. Source
