Ursula von der Leyen wants a European advisory board for AI

Ursula von der Leyen

During the last G20 summit, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, made a statement on new technologies. In it, she suggested setting up an advisory board on the topic of AI.

At the recent G20 summit in New Delhi, India, von der Leyen, in her role as President of the European Commission, proposed the idea of a European Advisory Council on AI.

Advantages and disadvantages

The future is digital, von der Leyen begins her statement. As has often been mentioned, AI has become an integral part of this. According to the European CEO, there are many risks associated with this technology, but at the same time there are also enormous opportunities to be gained from it.

That’s why von der Leyen puts forward the idea of setting up an advisory board. Europe and its partners should develop a global framework to map the risks of AI. Such a facility must provide protection but also invest in (safe and responsible) AI systems.

The right climate

von der Leyen compares her proposal to the IPCC, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The President of the European Commission would therefore like to involve relevant scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators. They must provide the knowledge to assess both the risks and benefits of AI.

Of course, Europe has been working on various aspects of AI for several years. This has already created perspectives and limitations. There was already a possible ban on facial recognition in public spaces three years ago. The Union has also already been working on a code of conduct on the subject of AI and of course there is also the famous AI law.
