The patent reveals that the big N could have an important ace up its sleeve to improve the JoyCon of the Nintendo Switch 2 console, its next generation. View the patent before entering problems must be remembered which the Japanese company had with Nintendo Switch controllers.
As many of our readers will remember, the analog sticks used by the Nintendo Switch suffered from severe drifting issues, a malfunction that causes record keystrokes that “ghost” and thus involuntary actions occur on the screen. So, for example, things like a character or a camera can move by themselves.
The problem has reached such a scale that Nintendo had no choice but to offer free repairs to the affected JoyCon. To prevent this problem from happening again, and to improve the player experience, the Japanese company could use a magnetorheological fluid replace the traditional potentiometers and contacts of the current JoyCon.
Using a magnetorheological fluid and a magnetic control system, it is possible to vary the density and resistance offered by the fluid as it reacts with magnetism. Just change the specific intensity of the magnetic field so the liquid becomes more or less denseand thus more or less resistant.
Obviously, to achieve this effect, it is necessary to integrate the overall magnetic field control system. With a control system of this type wear and tear problems would be completely eliminated that we saw on the JoyCon, and at the same time it would be possible to create and offer personalized gaming experiences depending on the strength of the movement we want to create.
For example, developers could use this technology to make fluid resistance increase or decrease depending on what’s happening on the screen, to create an experience similar to what we saw with the PS5’s adaptive launchersto give a simple and well-known example.
It’s a very interesting development, no doubt about it, and its use on the Nintendo Switch 2 would be good news, but it is not confirmed, so we have to take the information with a grain of salt as it’s just a good idea on paper at this point. I remind you that if everything goes according to plan, the launch of this console will take place sometime in 2024, probably in the first half of the said year.
