It looks like Apple has extended its agreement with Qualcomm for modems. The renewed agreement will allow the latter to continue supplying the former for another three years. This news differs from our previous report that the brand would soon switch to its own 5G modems.

Apple’s 5G modem is delayed

For those who don’t know, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that the Cupertino-based giant plans to switch to its own 5G modems by 2025. However, a recent report from Bloomberg suggests that the dedicated modem is not ready for the iPhone yet. Apple previously purchased an Intel modem and is working on its own 5G modem to move away from Qualcomm hardware.

The analyst added that the 4th generation iPhone SE will be the first model with the new modem and is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2025. However, now it seems that Apple will be with Qualcomm until 2026 and will trust its modem. Qualcomm is Apple’s sole 5G modem supplier, starting with the iPhone 12. Apple is currently the chip giant’s largest customer, accounting for 22.3 percent of orders.

In recent years, the iPhone maker has been working to become more self-sufficient. It develops technology and components that will reduce dependence on third-party suppliers. Qualcomm, which currently holds the monopoly of 5G modems, offers the most advanced modems for mobile devices. Leading smartphone brands such as Samsung also use their modems for wireless networks.
