Using data from NASA’s James Webb space telescope, astronomers discovered carbon dioxide on the icy surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa.

This is stated in the press release of the American space agency, Ukrinform reports.

Analysis of the data shows that this carbon likely originates from the subsurface ocean and not from meteorites or other external sources.

It was also deposited on a geologically recent time scale. This discovery has important implications for the potential habitability of the ocean on Jupiter’s moon Europa.

“Life on Earth loves chemical diversity; the more diversity the better. Our life depends on carbon,” said study lead author Jeronimo Villanueva of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “It will help us determine if it’s hostile or if it’s a good place to live,” he said.

Previous observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope in Europe indicated the presence of ocean salt in the Tara region.

“We now see that carbon dioxide is also quite concentrated here. We think that means the carbon is probably coming from the inland ocean,” added study author Samantha Trumbo of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

As Ukrinform reports, a new study of K2-18 b, an exoplanet 8.6 times larger than Earth, using the NASA James Webb Space Telescope has revealed the presence of carbon molecules, including methane and carbon dioxide.
