Data company IDC has published its expectations for the wearables market in the coming years. Particular attention was paid to VR/AR headsets, which, according to IDC, have not yet achieved a complete breakthrough.
The American data and analytics company IDC expects sales of VR/AR headsets to increase in the coming years. However, its numbers show that other wearables will continue to dominate in total units.
main thing
The market for VR/AR headsets is not easy. In the second quarter of this year, sales of wearable devices fell by almost half compared to the previous year. IDC sees the economic climate and outdated hardware among manufacturers as the main causes. There will hardly be as many headsets sold this year as in 2017.
However, according to IDC, this trend will not continue. Advances in VR/AR at companies like Meta and Qualcomm are helping with headset development. The competition such as Apple, Sony, ByteDance and MediaTek does not stand still and competition is of course often good for development.
IDC expects growth of more than 45 percent for 2024, also thanks to Apple’s Vision Pro. More than thirty million VR/AR headsets are expected to be shipped by 2027, almost four times as many as this year.
portable
On the other hand, there is a much larger market for other wearables such as earphones and smartwatches. In the second quarter of this year it grew by 8.5 percent. The overall market value declined due to lower prices and various discounts from retailers.
Larger companies now also have competition from smaller niche companies, thanks to specific things like connected rings to collect certain data. Around 520 million wearables will be shipped this year, an increase of more than five percent compared to last year. IDC expects more than 625 million units by 2027.
The top three are still earbuds, smartwatches and smart bracelets. More than 381 million of the first units alone would be delivered worldwide by 2027 and the total number of smartwatches would easily exceed the 210 million mark this year.
For now, these are numbers that VR/AR headsets can only dream of. But the prognosis is positive and in the world of technology things can sometimes happen quickly. For example, these IDC predictions don’t mention the military research into AR headsets that Microsoft is conducting.
