At least eight people were lynched on Tuesday by residents of Mirebalais and the neighboring town of Sault-d’Eau, northeast of Port-au-Prince, after a hospital was attacked with automatic weapons the day before, as residents search for more gang members.

The university hospital in Mirebalais, a town about 40 kilometers northeast of Haiti’s capital, endured a hellish night under direct fire from automatic weapons, and the walls of the medical center, which is usually visited by vulnerable people, are riddled with bullet holes.

Since early this morning, young men armed with machetes and sticks have been walking the streets of Mirebalais and Sault-d’Eaux, looking for other suspected members of the attacking group, who may be in fields or abandoned houses.

Since April last year, more than 250 suspected bandits have been killed in Haiti as part of the Bwa Kale movement, created by people in various parts of the country to combat the activities of armed gangs in their surroundings.

New attacks despite the declared truce

The attack on the Mirabale hospital came days after leaders of major coalitions of armed groups such as GPEP and G9will announce a truce to facilitate the resumption of activities in Haiti.

The two armed coalitions now say they have united in an association called Ensemble Vivre (Live Together).

Over the course of several days, Sault d’Eau was subject to repeated attacks by gangs from the Village de Dieu (in the center of Port-au-Prince), which left at least a dozen civilians dead and led to the establishment of a police station in the area. fire. .

The actions come after a shipment of ammunition from the Village de Dieu gang was allegedly stolen by civilians, according to videos circulating on social media.

This Monday, upon returning from the United Nations General Assembly, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry reacted to the supposed truce between armed groups by saying that bandits remain bandits and cannot contribute to peace and coexistence.

“Gangs cannot bring peace. Gangs can’t bring people together. Stripes are a symbol of separation. The dishonest actions taking place in Sault d’Eau and the destructive actions in Carrefour-fey make it clear that bandits are still bandits. Bandits are criminals. Bandits are killers,” he said.

Fight for control of territory

For its part, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a document published last week that another gang truce reached in mid-July appears to be holding.

However, he warned, these groups “appear to be taking advantage of this lull to concentrate their efforts on expanding their control into areas that are not already under their influence.”

This situation has led to extremely violent clashes between gangs and the local population, especially in areas where vigilante groups have formed.

“It is possible that the change in gang dynamics is partly due to progress in negotiations to deploy a multinational security mission,” the organization said. EFE
