Guatemala: President-elect Bernardo Arevalo thanks international support

He elected President of Guatemala for the period 2024-2028, Bernardo Arevalo de Leonthanked this Saturday for the international support received at the meeting of the Puebla group, after on Friday the Ministry of State (Prosecutor’s Office) raided for the fourth time the headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) in a case that is in reserve.

“We have broad international support. The international community saw that what was really at stake in our country was the defense of democracy and expressed its support to the beleaguered authorities, in this case the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the people of Guate, by defending their process. Arevalo said.

Arévalo de Leon won the August 20 election in a runoff, defeating former first lady Sandra Torres. The difference was almost a million votes, and the result was welcomed internationally.

The US has already recognized the result.

The politician explained that they are taking the necessary actions before the Constitutional Court and called on this authority to begin restoring order.

“We have called for some action, we have made it very clear that people are joining us in taking legal action that we are taking against the Public Prosecution Service. We have filed criminal complaints in the Supreme Court, we have filed lawsuits in the Court and the Constitutional Court to ensure that what is being done stops,” the president-elect continued.

He also explained that “the transition does not stop” because the transition is an established process that begins from the certification of the election results to the inauguration, a legal political process that cannot be interrupted.

From a legal point of view, we have no doubts, but we also see that people who have fun in these institutions have no restrictions, they use the justice institutions to commit illegal acts from there.

The ministry’s actions, he assured, violate Guatemala’s electoral laws.
