After meeting with AMLO, Arevalo suspends tour due to ‘coup process’

Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arevalo has suspended his international tour due to recent searches carried out by Guatemalan State Ministry officials at the headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

“We had to change the trip given the situation that arose with this brazen attack by the prosecutor’s office, in fact a coup d’etat in progress,” he said in a video posted on his social networks.

Arevalo, who asked the population to “continue to wait for further steps,” advocated the unity of Guatemalans “active and strong” in “defending every voice, democracy and the Constitution.”

He explained that he met with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Saturday to begin “outlining lines of bilateral cooperation,” in a meeting he called “excellent.”

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed “deep concern” at the actions of the “judicial authorities” who “appear” to “undermining the electoral process in Guatemala.”

“These events are the latest in a long line of highly troubling actions taken in recent weeks that collectively appear to be designed to undermine the integrity of the electoral process and the rule of law generally,” Turk said.

He stressed that “of particular concern are reports of harassment and intimidation of election officials and elected officials, including the President-Elect and Vice President (Karin Herrera).

Thus, Turk called on “all authorities in Guatemala to refrain from any new attempts to challenge the will of the popular vote”: “I call on all authorities to respect the rule of law and defend democracy.”

International pressure

The US announced visa restrictions for those linked to undermining democracy in the Central American country, understanding that the prosecutor’s actions are a continuation of other attempts to “strike immunity” from TSE election commissions.

On the other hand, the Spanish government demanded an end to “the Ministry of Justice’s constant doubts about the official statements of both the competent authorities for the electoral process in Guatemala and the statements of the various election observation missions declaring the integrity of the elections.” .” noticed.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Fight against Impunity (FECI), dependent on the Ministry of Justice, raided the TSE headquarters on Friday, where they seized the presidential election records. This action aroused the opposition of various civil organizations, from the Episcopal Conference to the communal cantons, indigenous people, who demanded the resignation of the persons responsible: Consuelo Porras, Rafael Curruchis and Fredy Orellana.

Since candidate Bernardo Arevalo’s Semilla Movement achieved surprising results – compared to what the polls predicted – in the first electoral round on June 25, the Guatemalan State Ministry took numerous actions to nullify the results or make this political formation illegal, actions which have received condemnation from the international community.
