This week marks the second anniversary of Windows 11 becoming available to the general public. The harsh reality is, despite all of Microsoft’s marketing efforts, the majority of Windows customers aren’t really concerned about the new version. According to recent figures from Statcounter, Windows 11 is currently installed on 23 percent of PCs, while Windows 10 still reigns supreme at 71 percent.

The adoption rate of Windows 11 is significantly higher among IT-savvy users, as a survey among our readers showed in May. In a sample of 364 users, 40 percent had already upgraded to Windows 11, compared to 30 percent who were using Windows 10.

However, if you don’t need the latest functionality, you can still use Windows 10 without hesitation. The operating system will continue to receive security updates until October 2025. Companies in particular tend to put off upgrading operating systems until it is absolutely necessary for fear that the update might cause problems, a fear that is far removed when it comes to Windows updates. of is unfounded. For some, security is also not an argument for switching to a newer version: three percent continue to use Windows 7 permanently. These users missed the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10/11 for free. Windows 8(.1) and, thank God, Windows XP have gradually become a rarity with market shares of less than one percent.

Windows 12 is just around the corner

It is rather doubtful whether last week’s major Windows 11 update, according to Microsoft the largest to date, can bring about a quick turnaround. There will be users who want to experiment with Copilot and other new features, but these will typically be users who are already using Windows 11.
