ChromeOS devices with better specs will now receive the Chromebook Plus label with exclusive features and AI features.

Google promises higher performance with the new Chromebook Plus devices due to the higher minimum system requirements. The search giant needs this to introduce exclusive software features and AI components to Chromebooks. The minimum functions that manufacturers must fulfill are:

  • 12th Gen Intel Core i3 processor or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 series
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 1080p IPS screen
  • 1080p webcam with noise reduction

Some Chromebooks available today that meet the above specifications will be updated with the “new software experience” in the coming weeks.

New, exclusive features

Many new software features have an AI side that can make the most of higher system requirements. For example, only Chromebook Plus devices get the AI Magic Eraser feature in Google Photos to erase people or objects in the background. Other “advanced functions” such as an HDR effect and increasing brightness are now exclusively reserved for Chromebook Plus devices.

The new devices can also count on AI to improve brightness and lighting during a video meeting. You can also blur your background and suppress background noise. Of course, the search giant prefers using Google Meet, but you can also activate the new features with other video calling apps.

Chromebook Plus devices can also use File Sync, a feature that automatically downloads files to Google Workspace for offline work. Hence the high storage requirement of 128 GB.

AI functions in the future

Future updates are planned for Chromebook Plus-eligible devices. For example, they want to introduce backgrounds into Google Meet using generative AI and at some point an AI writing assistant will also be available that takes notes with a right click.

Other details already known today include the activation of dynamic wallpapers (four times a day) and even AI-generated wallpapers, where the user can enter a number of parameters.

Compatible devices

At launch, four brands did their homework on compatible devices. There are a total of eight devices, which you can find below.

Prices vary between 450 and 800 euros excluding VAT. The new Chromebooks will be available starting October 8th. Existing devices that meet the system requirements can also expect an update at this point.
