With Ubuntu 23.10, Linux developer Canonical has released the latest major update for the operating system, which is installed on numerous servers and PCs worldwide. It is one of the most widely used Linux versions and is particularly popular in the corporate segment.

What’s new is the improved App Store, which is now more intuitive and supports both snap and deb formats. This makes it easier for you to discover new applications. According to Canonical, all apps go through a rigorous review process before release. By default, only necessary permissions are granted.

In addition, Ubuntu 23.10 finally supports Raspberry Pi 5 and SiFive Pro P550. The first is the fifth generation of the popular, affordable minicomputer. SiFive provides a RISC-V development platform where you can test applications focused on RISC-V environments.

Finally, Ubuntu now also supports Netplan, a network configuration tool that runs on Ubuntu Server. Version 23.10 is now also compatible with the latest Docker version 24.0.5.

Focus on security

Security is an important part of Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur”. For example, there is preview support for hardware-based full-disk encryption, where keys are stored in a TPM (Trusted Platform Module).

A change is also being made to the Ubuntu kernel to close a known vulnerability within the unprivileged User namespaces. At the same time, the Ubuntu kernel requires applications to use an AppArmor profile included in it User namespaceswhich reduces the potential attack surface.

Canonical Ubuntu 23.10 is now available worldwide. Download and install the package from the official website here.
