Apple TV 2024: everything we know so far

Apple is working on a new version of the 4K Apple TV, and rumors say it could launch as early as 2024, two years after the current model’s launch. This guide details everything we can expect to see on “Apple TV” 4K in 2024.

Design

Apple hasn’t visibly changed the design of “Apple TV” for several years, and that won’t change in 2024 either. We don’t expect any form factor updates, and it will continue to use the same slimmed-down black plastic body as the current “Apple TV” model.

new chip

The current “Apple TV” 4K includes the same A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13 series, and we expect a new A-series chip for the 2024 “Apple TV”. Apple is not developing chips specifically for “Apple TV”, so the next-generation model is likely to use the same A16 chip as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 models.

There’s also a possibility that the “Apple TV” 4K will include the A17 Pro chip used in the iPhone 15 Pro models, as this will allow the “Apple TV” to play console-quality games that were rumored years ago. The A17 Pro is Apple’s first 3nm chip with a 6-core GPU. This chip supports hardware acceleration of ray tracing for the first time, allowing games to have more realistic graphics. Many console games such as Resident Evil 4 and Death Stranding will come to “iPhone 15 Pro” thanks to the A17 Pro chip.

It’s also worth noting that the A17 Pro chip may be too expensive for Apple to include in “Apple TV,” especially since Apple is rumored to be targeting a lower price.

Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7

It would make sense for Apple to introduce new, more modern Wi-Fi protocols for the next generation “Apple TV”, but we haven’t heard any rumors about that. Current “iPhone 15 Pro” models support Wi-Fi 6E, and Apple is rumored to introduce Wi-Fi 7 to the iPhone early next year.

Current “Apple TV” 4K models support Wi-Fi 6, but upgrading it to at least Wi-Fi 6E will allow “Apple TV” to take advantage of the faster 6GHz band for better streaming and download speeds.

Apple offers both a Wi-Fi-only ‌Apple TV‌ 4K model and a Wi-Fi+Ethernet model, and this may continue in the next-generation model as well. We may also see the next “Apple TV” adopt Bluetooth 5.3.

“Apple TV” is expected to continue offering Thread integration and Matter support when used as the home base for smart home products.

Pricing

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said last year that he expected the next “Apple TV” to be more affordable, and that the sub-$100 price point would be “the sweet spot.” Prices for the current “Apple TV” 4K start at $129 for just 64GB of storage and Wi-Fi, so it’s hard to imagine Apple will introduce a new model at a lower price, or alternatively keep the current model as a lower-priced model not. along with a new model with updated capabilities.

launch date

Apple is said to be planning to launch the next “Apple TV” in the first half of 2024, which could debut at a spring event in March or April. Apple has introduced “Apple TV” 4K models in the past in September 2017, May 2021 and November 2022.

Future Apple TV innovations

Apple is rumored to be working on some sort of product that would combine “Apple TV” functionality, a smart speaker, and a FaceTime camera into a single device, but it’s been over a year since we last heard about it.

There are also rumors of an Apple smart home display that will act as a central hub for controlling smart home products, and there’s also a chance it could have “Apple TV” functionality. This product could launch in 2024, but it’s different from the next-generation “Apple TV” 4K, which is still in development.
