With the global launch of Micro LED display among TVs this year, the Korean giant plans to use the new display technology in devices with smaller screen sizes, including smartwatches. Overcoming previous limitations, Micro LED now takes its place in ultra-wide screen TVs. Samsung offers 76, 89, 101 and 114 inch screen sizes for consumer electronics production.
Features of Micro LED
The company, which is trying to commercialize micro LED in smart watches, aims to replace OLED in the Galaxy Watch within a year. After establishing its Micro LED team late last year, Samsung has already begun developing micro LED displays for smartwatches. During the one-year development process and the subsequent research and development phase, the display’s real journey into small home electronics will begin.
The new display features small LEDs with dimensions less than 100㎛ (micrometers). It is thinner and emits light without a backlight or color filter. In particular, the size of Samsung micro LEDs is less than 50㎛, and the RCG cells are made of inorganic cells, which eliminates any burn-in issues and maintains quality for more than 100,000 hours. These displays provide an outstanding contrast ratio and emit light at maximum brightness.
Latest rumors claim that Giant is working on a “Galaxy Watch Ultra” model that will feature a new Micro LED display. Following in the footsteps of the Apple Watch Ultra, the new watch will have a better screen and advanced features than the existing Galaxy Watch models. Moving forward, we expect micro LEDs to find their way into smartphones and other smart devices, leading to better brightness.
