AMD launches the Radeon RX 7900M. This mobile GPU is aimed primarily at gamers, but shows that the chip designer has his sights set on the top of the Intel spectrum.
AMD launches the Radeon RX 7900M. This laptop GPU sees the light of day in an Alienware laptop from Dell, which immediately shows that the main target group at the moment is gamers and not professionals. However, the GPU stands out for its ambition and structure.
The AMD Radeon RX 7900M is based on the RDNA3 architecture and is a successor to the RX 7900 XTX that the company launched for the desktop last year. These GPUs were the first to be based on the RDNA-3 architecture with associated chiplets. Chiplets are small modular components on a microchip that make the overall system simpler and scalable. Since the introduction of Zen, AMD has been manufacturing its CPUs with chiplets, which is an important success factor.
This AMD Radeon RX 7900M also consists of chiplets. The device was designed for the laptop and is therefore, not surprisingly, a little less powerful. This way you only get 72 CUs (Arithmetic units) on the mobile GPU, compared to 96 CUs on the RX 7900 XTX. The clock speed is also reduced to 1.825 GHz instead of 2.3 GHz. You also get 16GB of GDDR6 memory.
AMD sees the chip as a competitor to the Nvidia RTX 4080 with 12 GB of memory. For gaming, AMD’s GPU would perform better in most (but not all) cases. AMD relies on benchmarks for modern games with 1440p resolution.
The chip shows that AMD also wants to compete with Nvidia at the top of the segment, although the company is not blowing anyone away with the new GPU. Nevertheless, the chip is a welcome addition to a series that has actually been waiting for it for a year.
