Joseph David Emerson, the pilot accused of trying to shut down the engines of an Alaska Airlines plane in the middle of a commercial route, told police he had previously used psychedelic mushrooms.
The pilot was accompanied by the official crew of the aircraft, which had 83 people on board.
During the flight between Astoria and Portland, Oregon, according to statements from pilots and aircraft personnel, a man pulled the red lever which is used to extinguish fires in aircraft engines.
When the mechanism is activated, the fuel supply to the engines is cut off and they are shut down, according to the indictment published this Wednesday.
Here is the story included in the indictment:
Pilot 1 said there was no indication anything was wrong with Emerson, who was a passenger in the cockpit.
He said that while sitting on the jump seat in the cockpit, Emerson said, “I don’t feel good.” Pilot 2 turned to see Emerson reach out, grab the red fire levers, and pull them down.
“Pilot 1” explained that these levers activate the aircraft’s fire extinguishing system, used to extinguish engine fires.
At this point, “Pilot 1” grabbed Emerson’s wrist, and “Pilot 2” declared an in-flight emergency. “Pilot 1” said Emerson was initially reluctant and they physically confronted him for what he estimated was 25 to 30 seconds, and then the subject quickly calmed down.
Pilot 1 asked Emerson to leave the cockpit, and Emerson did.
Flight attendants received a call from the cabin that Emerson was “losing his temper” and needed to leave the cabin. Emerson was seen walking peacefully towards the back of the plane.
Emerson told the flight attendant that “he was simply kicked out of the flight deck.” Emerson told the flight attendant, “You have to handcuff me right now or this is going to go wrong.”
Flight workers placed Emerson in a seat in the back of the plane and handcuffed his wrists. While descending, Emerson turned toward the emergency exit door and tried to grab the handle.
The flight attendant stopped Emerson by placing her hands on Emerson’s arm. The flight attendant engaged Emerson in conversation, trying to distract him from trying to grab the emergency exit handle again.
Another flight attendant noted that Emerson made statements such as, “I ruined everything” and that he was “trying to kill everyone.” The flight attendant noticed Emerson had his cell phone out and appeared to be texting on it.
On the ground, the pilot was detained and agreed to talk to police. Emerson said he believed he was having a “nervous breakdown” and had not slept for 40 hours.
His story was: “I didn’t feel well. It seemed that the pilots were not paying attention to what was happening. “They didn’t… it didn’t feel right.” Emerson also said, “Yeah… I pulled both emergency lock handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just wanted to wake up.”
Emerson denied taking any medications but said he became depressed about six months ago.
The officer and Emerson discussed the use of psychedelic mushrooms, and Emerson said this was the first time he had used them.
When the police took him away, Emerson refused a lawyer.
