CCleaner data was leaked in a major hack

CCleaner announces that data from paying customers was leaked in the major MOVEit hack earlier this year. It is unclear why the company is only announcing this now.

CCleaner reports that its paying customers’ data was stolen by hackers. This involves personal data such as names, contact details and data about the products purchased. The parent company Gen Digital does not provide any information about exactly how many customers are affected. This would affect less than two percent of users.

Better late than never

It is unclear why Gen Digital is only now communicating about the hack. Finally, it goes back to the cracking of Progress’ MOVEit software that took place in June of this year. The Russian hacker collective Clop is said to be responsible for the theft of data from numerous large companies that used the affected software. Most organizations communicated about the impact of the hack over the summer. Organizations using MOVEit have since known that the software was vulnerable and was being exploited, and the same goes for CCleaner.

The very late transparency is even more damaging when you know which software Gen Digital has in its portfolio. Think Avast, Avira and NortonLifeLock. These antivirus tools are programs that you would most like to associate with reliability.
