If you’re going to buy an SSD or RAM, don’t leave it too long

Samsung has increased the wholesale price of NAND flash memory 20% over the last two quarters. Taking into account that the South Korean giant is the world’s largest manufacturer of this type of memory, analysts believe that the price of products that use them will increase for the end customer. And also those that use DRAM memories.

Buying an SSD to refresh your storage system is one of the most cost-effective upgrades any user can make. And the same can be said about increasing or upgrading RAM. The performance improvements are huge and at a relatively low cost.

The cost of memory, the main component of hard drives, or RAM, has been falling in recent years, and despite the general increase in costs in the technology market, buying SSDs or memory modules has been relatively economical.

But the trend is changing. Samsung announced last spring that it would begin a program to reduce memory production to avoid an oversupply of DRAM and NAND that had built up.

Buying an SSD will be more expensive

Market research firm Trendforce reported that Samsung has already raised the wholesale prices of its NAND chips by 10% to 20% this quarter, so buying SSDs it will cost up to 13% more by the end of the year. And in 2024 it will be worse.

Trendforce believes Samsung will continue to increase its wholesale price by 20% per quarter for at least the next two quarters, meaning suppliers could pay up to 44% more by mid-2024. Being the largest memory manufacturer already has a direct impact, but it is also likely that other manufacturers will follow suit. Some of them have already reduced production in the middle of the year and are raising wholesale prices.

The bottom line is that if you are thinking of buying SSD or RAM memory modules It would be wise to do this as soon as possible..
