Why do experienced drivers remake the air filter box of a used car?

The unexpected renaissance of the used car market is taking us back to the roaring 1990s much sooner than we would have liked. Unfortunately, this applies to both

One of the most inconspicuous elements of the engine compartment is the air filter box. Once a year it is opened, the filter element replaced and then closed for the following 12 months. In the event of a breakdown – for example as a result of an accident – the cheapest analogue or part of the disassembly is taken for replacement. Well, really, who cares: a plastic one is a plastic one. But that’s not true.
The air flow passing through the filter and entering the throttle valve to form the air-fuel mixture must have two parameters: volume and purity. With a bent, worn or broken gearbox it is not easy to achieve the factory readings and therefore proper operation of the engine. In addition, small sand and dust particles that “pass the cash register” cause problems in the cylinders later. To avoid this, check the condition of the box and repair it if necessary.
“Renovation” looks like this. The joints and cracks are glued with a special material, modelin, which seals the joint. This way the “box” starts to close better and does not rub or rattle, preventing self-destruction. As practice shows, this method can dramatically reduce the flow of dirt into the bowels of the engine, and the air flow itself becomes correct and normal.
By the way, it is not difficult to check the working method: when replacing the air filter, many people find mountains of dirt immediately underneath. Firstly, the element itself “leaves a lot to be desired”, and secondly, a lot of the same dust flies by, due to the broken “trunk”, which logically needs to be filtered out. By gluing the box with model paint, you can send all this dirt to the address, and not to the engine. The effect will already be noticeable during the next maintenance.
