Meta Platforms said that from 2024, advertisers will need to report when artificial intelligence or other digital techniques are used to modify or create political or social ads on Facebook and Instagram.

This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reported.

The meta would require advertisers to disclose whether an ad they modified or created showed real people doing or saying something they did not actually do, or whether it created a non-existent person who digitally resembles a real person.

The company will also ask advertisers to warn if the ad depicts events that did not happen, alters footage of an actual event, or even depicts an actual event without any actual footage, video or audio of that event.

The company’s new policy will not require disclosure if digital content is “immaterial to the statement, claim or issue raised in the ad,” including image resizing, image cropping, color correction or image sharpening.

Meta has already banned its Meta AI virtual assistant from creating photorealistic images of public figures.

The policy update, along with Meta’s previous announcement banning political advertisers from using AI ad tools, comes a month after Meta said it would expand advertisers’ access to AI ad tools that can instantly create backgrounds, adjust images and replace ad copy.

Google last week announced the rollout of similar AI-powered ad creation tools and said it plans to keep politics out of its products by blocking a list of “political keywords” that cannot be used as clues.

As reported by Ukrinform, the company Meta offers users in Europe access to Facebook and Instagram without advertising in exchange for a subscription.
