UK Police approved the celebration this Saturday at London one protest for the Palestinian cause despite it coinciding with Armistice Day, when the country commemorates those killed in its wars, as well as opposition senior government officials, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The date, which coincides with the anniversary of the end of the First World War, caused controversy because it was announced by march organizers who assured that the event would go ahead despite the government’s position.

London’s Metropolitan Police admitted on Wednesday that there were insufficient grounds to ban the demonstration. Police Chief Mark Rowley said.

The laws created by Parliament are clear. We do not have the power to ban this protest, so there will be a demonstration this weekend.

The government had been under pressure for days to prevent the demonstration from taking place on the scheduled date due to concerns that London Cenotaph, a war memorial located in Whitehall, was vandalized. In this sense, Rowley stated that although information gathered by intelligence points to these types of acts of “civil disorder”, this does not mean that a ban can be imposed.

At the same time, he emphasized that the organizers themselves took upon themselves the obligation to exclude this section from their route. London has recently become the scene of pro-Palestinian demonstrations as Israel bombs the Gaza Strip. Security forces estimate that the latest march, which drew more than 100,000 people to the British capital, resulted in the arrest of six accused out of 29 people detained.

This is exactly how the latest pro-Palestinian protests in London went.

Differences between labor

Open war between Israel and the Islamic resistance movement Hamas has caused divisions within the Labor Party. This Wednesday MP Imran Hussainresigned “with great regret”, given that the leader of the Labor Party Keir Starmeradheres to a position that does not correspond to his vision and represents an “accusation of conscience.”

“Over the past few weeks, it has become clear to me that my position on the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is very different from the position you have taken,” Hussein said in his resignation letter, which he has already handed over to Starmer.

Thus, he stressed the importance of “a truce to end the bloodshed and ensure sufficient assistance to those who need it most, while facilitating the safe release of Israeli hostages.”

Starmer sparked controversy in mid-October when he pointed out that Israel “has the right” to leave Gaza’s population without electricity and water in response to Hamas attacks on Israeli territory that have killed more than 1,400 people.
