Although HarmonyOS has a certain foundation inherited from Google’s operating system, Huawei wants to completely separate itself from Android. After the 2019 ban, the Chinese company had to adapt its software to the new situation, completely abandoning Google’s service framework. Thus, HarmonyOS was born, a modification of Android with its own code, but compatible with .APK files (although its code renamed this file format).

Now, according to the South China Morning Post, Huawei wants to take the next step. HarmonyOS Next is the evolution of the operating system, A “pure” version of HarmonyOS without Android libraries and this will replace existing versions of the platform.

Huawei has stated from the beginning that HarmonyOS is not Android. That’s not what your code says, it’s mostly shared with Android-based EMUI and renamed in file bundles to camouflage it as their own. The app store itself, App Gallery, It is the repository of .APK files, exactly the same as what we can find on Android. Main APIs, native system functions… Everything has an Android flavor because it’s Android.

According to Chinese sources, some of the country’s leading technology companies (JD.com, NetEase and Meituan) are promoting Huawei. Cut ties with Android, reaffirmed its position vis-à-vis the US and hired developers to create their own applications based on HarmonyOS. The aim is to break ties with Android and make the system 100% independent.

The first preview of HarmonyOS Next, in which the operating system will no longer be compatible with Android applications, is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2024. Google’s move to gradually move away from its operating system and towards a fully developed ecosystem in China.
