Microsoft has released the Windows application for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows and the web interface. It is a redesigned version of the Windows 365 application rolled into a single port to remote computers, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box.
The updated application includes resolution settings and screen scaling, and supports connection of peripheral devices including webcams, drives and printers. At the same time, the previous version of the program for Android is not yet available. Only Microsoft business account holders can use the new product, but there is a possibility that personal accounts will also be supported in the future.
This isn’t the first year that Microsoft has offered tools for remote access, but the release of a separate Windows program is a bold, almost radical decision and may indicate serious intentions to move Windows to the cloud. With the departure of Surface and Windows head Panos Panay to Amazon, Microsoft has created a new Windows team focused on web technologies.
Some of the web technologies have already begun to appear in Windows 11: dynamic search interface, widgets and integration with Copilot. During Microsoft’s lawsuit with the FTC, it became known, among other things, that the company intends to move its consumer Windows entirely to the cloud – something similar to what the company already offers to enterprise users in the Windows 365 format. Maybe logging out of Windows is another step in that direction.
