List of classic games for MS-DOS it’s huge, and we can find in it such beloved and fun titles as DOOM, Syndicate, Heretic, Comand and Conquer, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake and many, many more. I’m not going to do an exhaustive list because it would take a lot of time and because it’s also unnecessary since it’s available on Wikipedia.

They already have all those games about 30 years behind them, but they keep their charm intact, They continue to offer hours and hours of fun, which is why many gamers around the world, including myself, have never stopped playing them. In my case, DOOM 1993 has always been installed on all my PCs and I still play it with some frequency.

Playing MS-DOS classics on PC is very easy, but on other systems like Steam Deck it’s more complicated. Fortunately, this has changed thanks to DOS_Deck, a project that will allow us to play some of the classics of the mentioned operating system without problems on the Valve console and also on PC in a very simple and without having to install anything because it runs in the browser.

A total of 14 games are currently available, including Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, DOOM, Syndicate, Heretic, Comand and Conquer, and Jazz Jackrabbit. To play them, just select them and click the appropriate button, although not all of them are available in full version. Many of them are shareware versions that give us limited access to the gameand offer us the option to purchase them through various platforms such as Steam and Good Old Games.

In any case, it is an interesting project in its simplicity and the fact that it will allow even the youngest and not so young, remember what those works of art were like from the late eighties and the first half of the nineties, and in the case of shareware versions, they will help us decide whether we decide to buy the game or not.

If you want to play these MS-DOS classics from the Steam Deck, it’s very easy, just switch to desktop modeinstall Chrome or Edge, launch the one you installed and allow them access to the control system from the console. To do this, you need to enter the following commands in the console, depending on the browser you downloaded:

  • For Chrome: “flatpak override –user –filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.Google.Chrome” (without quotes).
  • For Edge: “flatpak override –user –filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge” (also without quotes).

When you’re done Follow these steps to complete the process:

  • Open Steam.
  • Right click on Chrome or Edge and go to properties.
  • Change the name to DOS_Deck.
  • In the launch options, put this as written: –window-size=1200,800 –kiosk “https://dosdeck.com”.
  • Restart Steam Deck in game mode.
  • Go to DOS_Deck (in your library) and choose Manage > Control Layout.
  • Choose Navigation Settings > Pad Control > Apply Settings and that’s it, you’re done.

Developer DOS_Deck has confirmed that new games will arrive on this platform in the coming months, although they will most likely be shareware versions, i.e. free but with limited content. I can confirm this at the moment Lemmings, Descent, Wacky Wheels, Duke Nukem 3D, Tyrian and Death Rally are on the way.
